A Commitment To Diversity And Inclusion

Bloomberg News

At Bloomberg, diversity and inclusion are central to our success. From extensive reporting to benchmarking our efforts at inclusivity and representation, we consistently strive to walk the talk.

Bloomberg Equality reports on racial, gender, economic and other inequalities across companies, institutions and politics, as well as highlighting policies that work: https://www.bloomberg.com/equality

This year, Bloomberg has been at the forefront of reporting on the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion at companies globally. We have been one of the few outlets relentlessly reporting on diminishing DEI in the UK. We revealed how financial firms have taken on a different strategy, publicly extolling the virtues of inclusion while quietly slashing budgets and abandoning plans.

Bloomberg prioritizes reporting on workplace culture, as evidenced through numerous stories on the treatment of staff in finance. For example, reporters revealed this year that Citigroup has faced complaints within its equities trading division in the UK and US.

MULTIMEDIA REPORTING Bloomberg's focus on diversity and inclusion is heavily reflected in our multi-media coverage. This year Bloomberg Audio spotlighted under-represented communities with an LGBTQIA roundtable about early-career workers and an award-winning exchange between a trainee and a managing director on being Black in finance. Our podcast tracking the rise in hate crimes against Jewish, Arab and Muslim communities won a New York Press Club prize and a Gold Signal Award.

DIVERSITY IN REPORTING INITIATIVES

We believe news coverage is more balanced and complete when we amplify the voices of women and underrepresented experts. To help achieve this, Bloomberg tracks gender diversity across our coverage, with annually rising targets on quoting more women and people of colour. Bloomberg has sponsored media training workshops in 16 global cities since 2018. More than 600 women and other under-represented executives have completed the New Voices course, leading to a tripling of on-air female representation: https://www.bloomberg.com/company/values/diversity-and-inclusion/new-voices/

EVENTS Bloomberg News will this December host its inaugural Women, Money & Power event at our European headquarters in London. We will be speaking with some of the most influential voices in finance globally, including Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser and Banco Santander Executive Chair Ana Botín: https://www.bloombergevents.com/WomenMoneyPower

DIVERSITY STAFF INITIATIVES Bloomberg has a commitment to diverse recruitment and growth that extends from our student education offering through to paid internships and our GOAL (Growth, Opportunity, Access and Leadership) program, designed to help underrepresented employees rise into more senior roles: https://www.bloomberg.com/company/stories/how-bloombergs-goal-program-helps-underrepresented-employees-rise/

We recently hosted 20 students in London for the Bloomberg Journalism Diversity Program, an effort that has trained nearly 250 journalists in the US and UK since its launch in 2017.

The initiative was founded by Matt Winkler, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Bloomberg News. "Journalism is about who is asking the questions,” Winkler said. “We also know that if everyone asking the questions looks and sounds alike, there is little chance of explaining the world as it really is."

The UK effort is delivered in conjunction with City University, and includes training led by reporters and editors on the fundamentals of business reporting and writing.
