Evening Standard

The Evening Standard was the first newspaper to cover the launch of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine on February 24 in print, with a "wipeout" splash hitting the streets within hours of the first missiles landing, depicting the bloodied face of Olena Kurilo following a strike in the town of Chuguev.

The image would go on to be shared by media around the world as the injured teacher became the first “face of the war”.

Underneath the picture ran the powerfully succinct headline “Putin’s bloody war”. Our front page turned to five more pages of coverage inside, including an exclusive dispatch from leading UK journalist Deborah Haynes as she woke up to the missile barrage in Kyiv, as well as world reaction to the horror and analysis. The front page’s impact was made even greater when it was shared by none other than Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky, who posted an image on his official Instagram page - followed by 16.8 million people - with the words: “The whole world knows the truth. All the world hears it. The entire world is behind us and we can feel it.”
