Jack Hill
The Times
Jack Hill has been a photographer with The Times and The Sunday Times since 2002 and
regularly covers international stories and global conflict. As chief news photographer in the past year he has travelled from Congo to the Ukrainian frontline, from Italy to see the raising of The Bayesian superyacht to the beaches of Northern France to cover migrants attempting to board boats bound for England.
Hill’s strength lies in his ability to be creative under pressure, anchored in clear editorial purpose and ensuring vulnerable people are always viewed accurately and with respect. In his work, he demonstrates creativity, agility and bravery.
Impactful work includes his photos of wounded Ukrainian soldiers undergoing life-changing facial reconstruction surgery. One soldier has had 10 operations to rebuild his face after having his skull smashed and both eyes destroyed.
For another story, Hill travelled to Goma in the M23 Controlled DRC, visiting a mine to capture powerful images of workers hauling, washing and bagging precious minerals. Another image shows the reality of migrants scrambling to board ‘taxi’ boats to England from Northern France, risking their lives after paying smugglers thousands of pounds to board the overcrowded vessels.
Judges’ comments: “Jack captures the essence of humanity and its struggles and brings honesty and integrity to his subjects.”
