It took a great deal of negotiation for us to get exclusive access inside Greater Manchester hospitals and we are immensely proud of the results.

In a series of articles we looked at how the pandemic impacted on the NHS, staff and patients, not just in ICUs but across the healthcare system. We prioritised quality storytelling, use of images and creative headlines. We wanted to launch the series with a strong front page and we chose this striking image from Joel Goodman. It was at a time when some people were still questioning the seriousness of Covid.and using this image in this way had a huge impact in conveying humanity and vulnerability.
