Rob Pattinson
The Sun
Seventeen years after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Rob Pattinson achieved an exceptional breakthrough for The Sun, which formed the basis of a Channel 4 documentary and broke new ground in the ongoing mystery.
Pattinson spent a year investigating why Germany’s high-profile case against prime suspect Christian Brueckner appeared to collapse despite seemingly overwhelming evidence. Spending months on the ground in Germany and Portugal, navigating local police, prosecutors, media and other judicial figures, he overcame wariness of British press intrusion, building trust with key sources. Whistleblowers began to talk, documents surfaced, and The Sun gained unprecedented access to the full German case file on Brueckner.
The documents revealed evidence including fictional stories the suspect wrote about child abductions, Skype messages to other paedophiles, and photographic evidence placing Brueckner at key locations. Pattison also uncovered incriminating insurance records and discovered the existence of a hard drive and laptop thought to contain photographic evidence central to the case.
His persistence led to additional exclusives, including an interview with an ex-cop who revealed she paid for Brueckner’s early release due to concerns over his human rights. His investigations, which have always prioritised whistleblower protection, ensured the McCann case continues to receive public and legal scrutiny.
Judges’ comments: “A spectacular scoop that is a fitting reward for the huge effort and skills invested in the pursuit of it… Rob's investigation into Brueckner exemplifies what tenacity and investigative skill means.”
