The Times

The Times had an action-packed year. Its commitment to world coverage was exemplified in its comprehensive coverage of the US election, helped by the launch of the US version of its website. Coverage of the UK general election was equally impressive: the editions published on the day after Rishi Sunak’s decision to call an election and the day after the election itself were beautifully designed must-reads.

Billy Kenber’s exposé of Tory MP Mark Menzies demanding campaign cash to “pay bad people” became one of the most talked-about stories of the year. Meanwhile, head of investigations Paul Morgan-Bentley went undercover as a prison contractor escort to reveal the shocking state of security at Bedford Prison.

Times Sport and The Times Magazine are both powerhouses of talent and readability, and a rebuilt home page, with nine new sections and a rethink of how to tell stories for mobile, has paid off in its 600,000 digital subscribers and the highest ABC1 composition in the overall news-brand market.

The podcasts portfolio has grown further, and Times Radio’s weekly reach rose 12 per cent year on year as Andrew Neill became its one o’clock anchor. “The complete package across print, digital and radio,” concluded the judges.
